Hounded out of George IV

I’ve not long arrived home from George IV pub along Chiswick High Rd where I spent the evening with some friends. We had a nice evening overall – good music and the bar service was adequate considering it was a busy evening. They served drinks up until 1am but by 1.05am the security staff were handing out plastic glasses to everyone and ordering them off the premises. I questioned the fairness and morality of these actions with one of the security staff, to which he replied: “Following orders, mate, following orders”. Disgusting.

Why should the security guy who is probably on minimum wage and had to deal with stupid drunks all night be expected to hang around for people to finish drinking let alone offer them plastic glasses to continue drinking outside the pub and disturb the neighbourhood. Am all for a good knees up but surely by 1 am if you have not pulled it's time to go home! Whatever happened to the bar bell going off 15 mins before closing time and you were expected to down it as the lights were slowly switched off and thrown out..

You sound like one of those layabouts who spend their  summers in noisy resorts like Ayia Napa, Magaluf and Frinton-On-Sea getting s**t-faced 24 hours a day, Mr Brown.Instead of publicly boasting of your weakness for booze, you should  be privately attending meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous.If you wish to discuss the matter, I'll be cracking open a bottle of the house  red at G4 at 3 this  afternoon.

Hounded out,MB, id throw you out with a kick up the back side for extra treatment. On a serious note,last time it happened to me was when they came around and asked you to drink up. By 10 past if they come past again and see you have made no effort to drink up they will hand out a plastic glass and get you to leave straight away. It normally is targeted at groups rather than individuals

I like the George IV their staff are always friendly and helpful to me in all matters.  I have been there until one am before at a gig and they have ushered out a noisy boisterous crowd with good humor and a nod to the safety of the punters.  But 01.00am closure does not mean drinking until 01.00am as the licensee has the duty to be closed without any customers at 01.00am.  Would you go to Sainsbury's at 07.15am if they said they closed at 07.00am?  i take you were not abused or manhandled as you would have mentioned it. if you want to be considered a good customer when you next go in tell them you are sorry you were stroppy to them and you appreciate their service.  I can guarantee you will not be the last served at a packed bar again

I agree with you regarding the staff however last orders is 1 am. They usually start asking people to leave at 20 past 1.Perhaps the staff were having a lock in.

There was a pub in Salcombe many years ago that would have a lock in every night. The manager was a real Cornwall boy and after 11pm the doors were locked and whoever was in there was treated to him turning the lights off and telling sea fairing ghost stories around the fire into the early hours. Fantastic fun that was. Sadly that pub is long gone (as is the landlord I imagine) and it is now a Post Office and gift shop.

I would formally provide 20 mins drinking up time and politely advise people of this during this period, but I would only put any real pressure on people to leave between 20 and 30 mins if they’d not done so already. I’ve not been to ‘The Duke of Kent’ pub in Ealing for a while, which is also a Fullers pub, but this is pretty much how they went about things at closing time when I was visiting, and it worked well for all – practical, fair and effective.

Have you not heard of the "one for the road" drink? Buy one as the pub is about to close and pour it into a plastic glass and Bob is your uncle on your walk home or you could just man up and knock it back in one if you were stupid enough to order it at 1 am when you know the joint closes at that time!

I’ve always liked your posts James, but in this instance, I think you’re being a bit rude. Why pour a pint to then only 5mins later tell the drinkers to leave the premises? My local pub always shout “drink up ladies and gents... we’re closing in 15 minutes”. It’s a polite warning to go home.

You got me Michael.Also you are absolutely right on this issue - totally unacceptable to keep serving right up to time being called and then not allow sufficient drinking up time. If you take this alongside the Bell and Crown fiasco there is a pattern emerging with Fullers pubs which used to be impeccably run. Could it be that since the brewery sale the pressure is on management to increase profits. One way of doing that is only paying staff up until time called.

Michael Brown was sharing a grievance. That’s all. James and Steve - I think you’re being unnecessarily rude and very childish. What bar staff/management (in their right mind) would pour a customer a drink and within 5mins offer them a plastic glass and tell them to leave the premises? That wouldn’t happen in a restaurant. Imagine being given a paper plate and plastic cutlery to finish off your dinner. You both owe Michael an apology.

It’s been wrongly assumed by some fools on here that I bought a drink close to 1am and didn’t have time to drink it on the premises. I’d been nursing a drink for some time and I finished it close to 1am; but many people hadn’t finished their drinks and were made to reduce the height of each bouncer’s squidgy plastic cup tower, pour their drink into it and leave.
