Thank you Andrew, for a fascinating photo, also Hans for that equally fascinating link.I had always wondered about the church, what with it having the window spaces all bricked up. Of course I might have considered that the windows were bricked up because of air raids etc, except that the photo indicates that only the top level was originally glazed/blown out. Anyhow, I wonder why they don't (re)instate at least some of the windows, whether stained or glazed, since that should greatly enhance the present external appearance, which I always think is like a cross between a 1930's power station and the Kremlin. Too costly perhaps? As for the bell tower, it's not apparent from the picture angle, but was it there in 1944, or did it come later? Also, to my entirely untrained eye the present bell tower looks to me like a Tuscan campanile(?), which I always thinks puts it out of kilter with the main building. Any architectural historians out there to put me right? Finally, Bernard mentioned the V1 hitting the pyrene factory on the GWR. I had to google "pyrene" which disclosed that:"Pyrene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon consisting of four fused benzene rings, resulting in a flat aromatic system. The chemical formula is C ₁₆H ₁₀. This yellow solid is the smallest peri-fused PAH."Way to make a man feel stupid, eh? lol
