Organisation best known locally for running Acton Food Drive
September 17, 2025
On Saturday 20 September, volunteers from the London chapter of the social justice charity Who Is Hussain? will take part in a coordinated clean-up effort across four boroughs—Harrow, Brent, Ealing and Westminster—as part of World Clean Up Day. The initiative aims to address growing concerns about litter accumulation in public spaces and its impact on urban wildlife.
The charity plans to deploy around 100 volunteers between 10am and 2pm, with activities focused on known litter hotspots including Witham Road, Bedford Road, Kirchen Road and Dean Gardens in West Ealing. Organisers are working to increase volunteer numbers in Ealing, where 15 participants have already been confirmed.
Nationally, public concern about litter appears to be rising. A survey by Keep Britain Tidy found that 77% of respondents believe the problem has worsened in recent years, with 70% reporting daily sightings of litter in their local area.
Wildlife organisations have also raised alarms. The RSPCA reports receiving an average of ten calls per day about animals injured by discarded waste, though the actual number of incidents is likely higher due to underreporting.
Kumail Jaffer, London team lead for Who Is Hussain?, said the clean-up is part of a broader call for civic responsibility. He commented, “We shouldn’t have to rely on World Clean Up Day to keep our streets safe and clean. Combating litter must become part of our daily civic duty.”
The London event forms part of a wider international effort by Who Is Hussain?, whose chapters in over 90 cities have undertaken environmental initiatives ranging from tree planting in Kenya to urban gardening in the United States. The charity, founded in 2012, is volunteer-led and non-political, with a focus on community service inspired by the values of Hussain ibn Ali.
Local representatives have expressed interest in the upcoming clean-up. MP Rupa Huq and London Assembly Member Bassam Mahfouz—who previously volunteered with the charity—are in discussions with organisers about attending.
