New course starting for complete beginners
A series of free running groups aimed at helping complete beginners get into regular exercise is being launched across Ealing.
RUN AND HAVE FUN courses for up to 25 people will take place over eight weeks in Southall and Northolt from next month, followed later by Acton. They are being supported by Ealing Council and Sport England. Participants will receive guidance from UK Athletics-qualified coaches to help them begin to run slowly, initially for a minute or two at a time, with regular walking breaks.
Course leader Kelvin Walker said: “By the end of the course, we’d like to see people being able to run non-stop for at least 15 minutes. That way, they’ll be able to practice regularly to hopefully continue running into the future.
“One of the things that stops people from running is feeling self-conscious. We aim to help people build friendships with other people on the course so that they get mutual encouragement to help them carry on improving their fitness.”
The first of the courses will take place at Dormers Wells Leisure Centre, Southall, between 7:30am and 8:30am on Tuesdays, from September 2nd. Another programme will take place at a Northolt location between 10am and 11am over the same dates.
Sessions at Acton will be scheduled for the new year.
The sessions are aimed at people with no recent running experience and not suitable for those already able to run distances over a mile. Those interested in taking part should email: running@ealinghalfmarathon.com
They are being provided by the team behind the award-winning Ealing Half Marathon, which is a community interest company aimed at promoting running across the borough.
“Running is a fantastic, sociable activity and we want to spread the Ealing Feeling by encouraging people who’ve never had the confidence to try it out.
“Hopefully, they’ll enjoy feeling their fitness quickly improve,” said Kelvin, a level three UK Athletics coach with Ealing Eagles Running Club, where he helped set up the beginners programme.
