Residents, schools, and local businesses are being urged to "get their hands dirty" this month as work begins on a major new green space in Southall. Ealing Council has partnered with environmental charity Letting Grow to transform a patch of wasteland at Glade Lane Canalside Park into a thriving microforest.
The project will see 3,000 native deciduous trees—including oak, beech, rowan, cherry, and hawthorn—planted throughout January. The initiative is part of a wider commitment by Ealing Council to rewild hundreds of acres across the borough, enhancing local biodiversity.
The charity is calling for "Forest Makers" from all walks of life to help with the planting. Beyond the environmental impact, Ross Walker, CEO of Letting Grow, emphasises that the project is as much about people as it is about trees.
"This is a fantastic chance for everyone to get outdoors, reconnect with nature, and make an impact by creating a new urban forest from scratch," said Walker. "Working in nature has been shown to give people a real psychological boost. Plus, it’s a great way to learn and for teams to bond through cooperation."
Once mature, the microforest is expected to absorb up to 30,000 kilogrammes of carbon dioxide every year. Experts note that microforests are particularly effective in urban environments because they can be planted in areas as small as a tennis court while still providing rapid growth and soil enhancement.

The project follows the success of previous "Forest Makers" events, which have been praised for their organisation and welcoming atmosphere. One regular volunteer noted: "I was impressed by the knowledge and expertise of the team who went out of their way to make all the volunteers feel welcomed and appreciated. Full marks to everyone involved!"
Letting Grow will provide all necessary equipment, including spades, for those wishing to take part.
How to Get Involved
