London Welsh School in Hanwell (Ysgol Gymraeg Llundain) has been named one of ten finalists in the 2025 Big School Makeover competition, a London-wide initiative offering schools the chance to secure funding for building improvements. The contest, run by Leyland SDM, invites public voting to determine which schools will receive a share of £10,000 in decorating and DIY materials.

Located in the Hanwell Community Centre on Westcott Crescent, London Welsh School is a small independent bilingual institution dedicated to Welsh-language education. Staff say the school’s facilities are in need of refurbishment, and that winning the competition could help revitalise both classroom and outdoor spaces.

Lead Teacher Emilia Davies said the school faces financial constraints that limit its ability to carry out necessary upgrades. She noted that the makeover would support the school’s aim to create “bright, inspiring spaces” that reflect its cultural heritage.

Voting opened on 21 October and will close on 18 November. The school with the highest number of votes will receive £5,000 in materials, while two runners-up will be awarded £2,500 each. Votes can be cast daily via the competition website.

The other finalists include schools from across London, such as Anson Primary, Falconbrook Primary, and La Retraite Roman Catholic School for Girls. Previous winners used the funding to refurbish classrooms, corridors, and sports facilities.

London Welsh School continues to serve a niche community in west London, offering Welsh-language education in a region where such provision is rare.
