Speciality tea and coffee shop closes

Another Chiswick High Road shop has bitten the dust with the closure of Whittard of Chelsea which sold speciality tea and coffee products.

The closure was preceded by a 70% sale at the store which, despite being part of a chain, had a reputation for friendly customer service in the area.

Whittard’s was previously saved from closure in 2008 after it was bought out by private equity firm, Epic.

It was owned by Icelandic investment company Baugur, which was placed into administration and the business and its assets sold. Epic bought Whittard's for an undisclosed sum as a going concern according to Retail Week. All of the stores, including the Chiswick branch, remained open.

Founded in 1886 by Walter Whittard, the tea and coffee company had 130 stores in the UK.

We contacted Whittard's to ask if they could give reasons why their Chiswick store was closed but we have yet to receive a reply
