The multi-million pound retailer QVC made its first broadcast from its new purpose-built Media and Commerce Centre in Chiswick today (Thursday, June 7th). The company has invested £33.6 million in the move from its previous base in Battersea.

The channel has an array of celebrity guest presenters who will be broadcasting from the new location, including singer Lulu, interior designer Kelly Hoppen, skincare expert Liz Earle, and handbag designer Lulu Guinness.

Staff made their last broadcast from the Battersea building at 2 a.m. and then had a quick turnaround to be on time with the first broadcast in Chiswick at 9 a.m.

A total of 600 staff will be based in the new Chiswick headquarters.

QVC UK-the acronym stands for Quality, Value, Convenience- is the largest TV shopping channel in Britain, and broadcasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with 17 hours of live programming each day (from 09:00 to 02:00 UK time).

Dermot Boyd, CEO of QVC UK, commented:  “We had outgrown our previous home in Battersea, where we had been since our first broadcast in October 1993, when QVC was the only live shopping channel in the United Kingdom.

“The blank canvas that Chiswick Park offered has allowed us to ergonomically design the new building with these unique multi-media retail needs in mind, vastly improving the flow of products from our London warehouse to the studios.”

The state-of-the-art interior of QVC

The flagship building is 13,000 square metres, built over five levels, and took 36,000 hours to complete. Over 140,000m of copper and 3,000m of multi-core fibre cable were used for the complex IT cabling network, and a further 110,000m of cabling was then needed for the TV installation.

Dermot Boyd added ;

“The teams involved, both internal and external, have worked tirelessly to ensure that there has been a seamless transfer from our old building where our live broadcast finished at 02:00 this morning to here. As the lights go off in Battersea, they are straight back on at our new home in Chiswick. This investment demonstrates our commitment to providing our viewers with the highest level of broadcast and service, and our employees with a vastly improved working environment.”

QVC, Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Liberty Interactive Corporation (Nasdaq: LINTA),and is the world’s leading video and ecommerce retailer. It broadcasts to 195 million homes worldwide selling beauty, fashion, jewellery and home products.
