Future Looks Bleak For Chiswick Game Shop

Company goes into administration as staff wait to hear latest

The future for the Game shop on Chiswick High Road looks bleak following the news that the Game Group has gone into administration today (Monday March 26th)

The seven staff at the store were expecting to lose their jobs but were waiting to hear from their employers. One said they did not know how long the shop would stay open but they were continuing to work normally.

The troubled high-street retailer suspended trading its shares on the London Stock Exchange last Wednesday.

The shop in Chiswick was doing a brisk trade today with a sale on many of its products. But customers will be unable to use points on loyalty cards from now on.

The group employs about 10,000 staff at its 1,300 stores, 609 of which are in the UK and Ireland which employ half the workforce. They also have stores in France, Spain, Portugal , the Czech Republic, Scandinavia and Australia. Game Group employs 385 staff at its headquarters in Basingstoke in Hampshire, and about 5,100 in its stores in the UK and Ireland.

The company said the decision to go into administration had been taken “after careful consideration and ceaseless interrogation of every possible alternative”.

The stores operate under the Game brand, as well as Gamestation. The move today followed confirmation that some suppliers had stopped doing business with the retailer.

A recorded message said that the call centre was closed and calls could not be transferred. The company’s website had the following message:

MJA Jervis and SD Maddison have been appointed as Joint Administrators of The GAME Group plc, Game Stores Group Limited, Gameplay (GB) Limited, Game (Stores) Limited, Games Station Limited, Game (Retail) Limited and Gamestation Limited on 26 March 2012, to manage their affairs, business and property as their agents and without personal liability.

The message continued:

"We are currently reviewing and processing orders placed on this website."
