Traders Disgusted With Devonshire Road Ditch

Describing hole left by gas works as ‘dangerous and disgraceful’

The ‘dangerous and disgraceful’ way in which Devonshire Road has been left after work to replace a gas main ground to halt has infuriated traders.

A ditch over a metre in depth which runs the approximate length of 11 of the shops on the left hand side of Devonshire Road (as approached from the High Road) remains exposed even after Morrison, the company carrying out the work on behalf of National Grid Gas, was notified of the hazardous situation.

Wild Swans owner Caroline told ChiswickW4 “It is affecting businesses along this side of Devonshire Road but more importantly it's dangerous. There is nothing to stop anyone from falling into the ditch and there’s not even any extra lighting at night. It's only a matter of time before there’s an accident.”

She continued “I called Morrisons to inform them of the situation and was told by the woman I spoke to that it was not her job to be chasing around after people.”

The works, which began earlier than scheduled after the discovery of a gas leak on March 17th, are to replace a section of worn out cast iron gas main with new, long lasting, plastic pipe.

A spokesperson for Hounslow Council said, “We have requested additional signage and barriers around the trench with the contractor.”

“It is likely that part of Devonshire Road will need to be closed.”

The work is expected to be completed by 12 April.
