Tesco Confirms Express Store Will Close in May
Says staff at High Road branch will be offered roles elsewhere

Tesco has confirmed that its Chiswick High Road Express store will close next month, bringing an end to late-night convenience shopping at one of the area’s busiest retail locations. The supermarket chain had first announced in February that the branch would shut later in the year, but it has now confirmed to ChiswickW4.com that the final day of trading will be in May, with no specific date yet given.
A Tesco spokesperson said the company had “taken the difficult decision” to close the store, adding that it would remain open as normal until the closure and that Tesco would “continue to serve the local area through a number of other nearby stores.” The retailer has also confirmed that all staff have been offered roles at other local branches, and discussions with employees are ongoing.
The store, located at 248 Chiswick High Road, is one of several smaller-format Tesco Express branches being reviewed across London as the company reshapes its property portfolio. Rising operating costs, shifts in shopping habits, and the growth of larger convenience formats have all contributed to Tesco consolidating sites where multiple stores operate close together.
The Chiswick branch has long been valued for its extended opening hours — 7am to 11pm daily — making it a destination for top-up shopping, last-minute essentials and late-evening purchases. Its closure will reduce out-of-hours options on the High Road, with nearby alternatives offering more limited hours.
The store’s front window is currently broken and boarded up, and it appears unlikely to be repaired before the closure, adding to the sense that the site is already winding down.
Local MP Andy Slaughter said he understood residents’ concerns about the loss of the store and the future of the site but that he had been informed that several new businesses are interested in taking over the unit, and he would continue to seek updates from Tesco and keep residents informed.
The closure comes at a time of significant change in the local supermarket landscape. Morrisons Daily is preparing to open a new store next to Turnham Green Station, adding another major chain to the area. Meanwhile, Marks & Spencer has recently expanded its Chiswick store, and its competitive pricing on everyday items such as milk may have influenced Tesco’s decision to withdraw from the High Road.
