Chiswick Cinema Hosts Lord Richard Attenborough Celebration

Sir Ben Kingsley, Dame Penelope Wilton, Geraldine James, Kevin McNally and George Fenton took to the stage to share their stories and memories with Michael Attenborough

Chiswick Cinema hosted an all-star cinema exclusive evening on Saturday as part of the hugely popular Lord Richard Attenborough Centenary Year celebrations.

This is one of a series of events showcasing the impressive talents of 'Dickie', as he was fondly referred to by the panel, by cinema programme and marketing manager, Chris Parker, in collaboration with Richard’s son, acclaimed theatre director Michael Attenborough CBE.

Sir Ben Kingsley (‘GANDHI), Dame Penelope Wilton (‘CRY FREEDOM’), Geraldine James OBE (‘GANDHI), Kevin McNally (‘CRY FREEDOM’) and George Fenton CBE (composer of ‘GANDHI’, ‘CRY FREEDOM’ and ‘SHADOWLANDS’) shared their stories and memories of working with one of Britain’s most beloved and important filmmakers. Michael Attenborough CBE chaired and provided many loving and revealing stories of the father he clearly adored.

There were laughter and tears interspersed with clips from some of Lord Attenborough's best known films as the actors and composer drew a picture of a much loved and very talented actor and director.

Sir Ben Kingsley referred to Lord Attenborough as the best sort of director who, once you had been given the part, trusted you with it rather than making you feel you were in a constant state of audition.

Geraldine James remembered Lord Attenborough's part in supporting Denville Hall, the home for retired theatrical workers. She said that Dickie always supported all those who he came across and was key to the success of Denville Hall.

Michael Attenborough CBE was a mine of anecdotes about his father. He depicted a man who could move seamlessly from directing his actors kindly to providing a steely and determined front to investors while constantly battling to obtain the means of financing his vision.

Everyone had experienced Lord Attenborough's kindness and humour and ultimately his humanity and dedication in bringing to life difficult periods in recent history and the human experience in an accessible form.
