Penny Gets Tools for Schools

Chiswick garden designer backs recycling programme

Penny Litchfield of Litchfield Gardens is the first garden designer to get behind the Conservation Foundation’s Tools Shed project which it runs with HMP Wandsworth.

Chiswick based Penny took the latest cache of tools from the Tools Shed collection point at RHS Wisley to Wandsworth Prison where they’ll be repaired and refurbished by the prisoners. The spruced up tools will be given to schools and community groups at a tools distribution day in October which The Conservation Foundation is organising with the prison and the RHS Campaign for School Gardening.

“It’s great to have Penny on board as a Tools Shed supporter,” said Conservation Foundation Director David Shreeve. “We’ve been keen to work with garden designers for some time and her enthusiasm and practical help are just what we need. We’re getting a lot of additional prisons around the country wanting to join in Tools Shed and so will need to find more people in the gardening world like Penny who can help in a variety of ways.”

“I was more than happy when asked by the Conservation Foundation if I would help out with their Tools Shed project. It’s such a great idea, and very rewarding for all those involved,” said Penny.

“As a garden designer I see many garden sheds and everybody has at least one rusty old tool hidden under the cobwebs at the back, which could be donated for recycling.”

The Conservation Foundation was founded in 1982 by David Shreeve and David Bellamy to provide a means for people in public, private and not-for-profit sectors to collaborate on environmental causes.
