Old Meads Ease Into Quarter Finals Against Lower League Opponents

Old Meadonians breezed into the Semi-Finals of the London Old Boys’ Senior Cup with a comfortable routine win over visitors to Riverside Lands, Glyn Old Boys, who, being from mid-table, two divisions below, might be termed minnows.

However, after the visitors revealed their hand by bearing their teeth early on, the hosts knew they had to be kept on the leash and, although at times the eager crowd might have been fooled into thinking that the hosts were sleep-walking, Meads always had enough in reserve to keep them out of trouble.

Their first came on twenty minutes when right back Jack Costello put over a tempting free-kick and centre-back Aidan Chapman rose to plant his header out of reach. At half-time, Assistant Manager Ali McCombe, flying solo, with manager Luke Graham away on a mystery scouting foray to The Big Apple, was happy that, if the constant and steady pressure applied throughout the first half continued, rewards would come.

Keeper Gary Robinson provided Meads’ second on the hour with a towering clearance which John Shea headed on and Craig Jones outpaced pursuit to round the keeper and tap in. With twenty minutes to go there was now an opportunity for the pot to be stirred as all subs were deployed, for one of them, Simon Richardson, to apply the finishing touch after Craig Jones had made a dramatic burst from the left to concertina the defence and provide an overlap on the right. Aidan Chapman was named MoM for planting the seeds of victory.
