Amateur Football Alliance Middlesex & Essex Senior Cup:
Latymer O.B. 2 Old Meadonians 2 aet
Penalties: Latymer O.B. W. 10-9
There’s no doubt that this was a bit of a choker, as it could be deemed that Meads threw this one away by failing to clear the ball after three attempts and conceding a last kick equaliser. However, according to a source close to the management, the whole team (with exceptions) are disappointed and aware of their shortcomings and are determined to rectify things, albeit without the additional burden of this peripheral cup.
The visitors had the brighter twenty minute start, taking a deserved lead when Gowers’ slide rule pass put rampaging Wilson away to burst in from the right and balloon the far corner of the net taking a chunk off the goalie’s hand in the process. On thirty minutes the hosts were level when a long throw was flicked on at the edge of the area and headed in from six yards. Five minutes later Bright beat three defenders with a ‘Strictly Smooth’ jinking run from the left and fed Wilson for a tap-in.
The second half saw Meads sleep-walking and consequentially scrappy play dominated by hosts who looked unlikely to equalise until the dying seconds of full time when, as ‘Sod’s Law’ dictates’ when the ball did come down it fell to one of them and he put it into the roof of the net, beating the ref’s whistle by a Formula1one/hundredth of a second.
A protracted penalty session had no one taking bets as to the winners and the whole team agreeing not to appoint a MoM. But meanwhile Wilson continues to churn them out!
Squad: Robinson, Harrison (Campbell), Gerrish (c), Chapman, Britner, Gowers (Mace), Shea, Bright, Glover, Wilson, Richardson (Costello).
