Meads Win As Injury List Shortens

Amateur Football Combination Premier Division - Old Meadonians 2 Kings Old Boys 0

Riverside Lands these days veer towards being reminiscent of the Retreats from Moscow, as Old Meadonians' long term injured arrive back at base in dribs and drabs.

On Saturday it was the turn of playmaker supreme, Jack Costello and influential pocket battleship Ryan Bright, the former starting and the latter coming off the bench, to make their comebacks. Meads still have five senior members of their squad on fitness regimes and, hopefully, within a month of being ready for return to duty.

Visitors, Kings Old Boys, who themselves looked underpowered, should be a banker for points as it is difficult to recall them creating a single chance, so tightly was the hosts' grip on the midfield and at the back. Meads took control from the kick off and took the lead on the half hour when indefatigable striker Nick Wilson got clear down the right and quick thinking by Costello put him at the far post to celebrate his return by applying a crisp volley to Wilson's cross.

The one area of the hosts' play which might be open to debate is the low rate of conversion of chances into goals which led to their cup defeat last week. Throughout the second half they gave the impression of being shot-shy when they might have been capable of quadrupling their lead and could possibly have put the visitors out of their misery long before the end. As it was, it was appropriate that, just before he came off shattered from perpetual motion with twenty minutes to go, it was Wilson whose fierce shot from the eighteen yard line was parried by the Kings' keeper into the path of midfielder Dave Brennan who snapped up the chance. In his post-match briefing manger Luke Graham was cautiously optimistic and named Nick Wilson as MoM.

Squad:- Beharrie, Britner, Chapman, Gerrish, Mace, Gowers, Greenslade, Shea, Costello, Wilson, (Bright), Brennan.
