Amateur Football Alliance Senior Cup Quarter Final

Bealonians 0 Old Meadonians 3

Another week on and Old Meadonians progress to a second semi-final, this time in the big one, the A.F.A. Senior Cup, at the expense of fellow A.F.C. premiership club, Bealonians who, whilst struggling in the league, have shown themselves to be doughty cup fighters, beating three teams from the Southern Amateur League, including removing a strong Civil Service team from Meads’ path in the A.F.A. Middlesex and Essex Senior Cup and notching twenty one goals against a mingy two in the process.

In fact, on Saturday, Beals could have added two more to this total before half time but for unaccommodating woodwork. The visitors’ rode their luck and over-eagerness and the hosts’ tight high line defending saw Meads frustratingly getting caught off-side too many times including unforgivably at free-kicks, thus stultifying their lion’s share of possession and leading to the coaches giving them a collective six out of ten at half time with orders to put things right.

Ryan Bright came on for Tom Etheridge on the restart and Meads’ first came ten minutes into the second half when Peter Eguae’s cross from the left deceived Beals’ keeper and came off the far post to drop invitingly to Craig Jones’ feet five yards out. A constant ten minute push brought the second when mid-fielder Dave Brennan burst over the half-way line split the defence with a glorious ball to Jack Costello whose cross was turned in by Jones. By now the pitch had become a leveller and there was still time for both keepers to exchange excellent saves before in a delightful move Bright skipped past two tackles in midfield fed full-back John Shea on the right and Jordan Mace trod air to volley home Shea’s cross. The MoM award went jointly to Gary Robinson and Aidan Chapman.

Squad: Robinson, Shea, Pointer, Thompson, Quinn, Etheridge, Chapman, Brennan, Costello, Eguae, C. Jones, Mace, Bright, Gerrish.
