Amateur Football Alliance Middlesex And Essex Senior Cup

Old Aloysians 0 Old Meadonians 8

Goal-hungry Old Meadonians broke their comparative fast by wolfing up hapless A.F.C. premiership colleagues Old Aloysians in a feeding frenzy, to power into the third round of the A.F.A. Middlesex and Essex Senior Cup after regaining their appetite with the added luxury of a penalty miss by Craig Jones.

To be fair to the hosts, they were obviously under strength, with key players including their regular keeper on the touch-line, and, with no wind to compound the decision, they chose rightly to play up the slight slope in the first half. However, they could not have forecast the hurricane that dominant Meads unleashed from the kick-off. Within ten minutes Aidan Chapman had a header cleared off the line and Craig Jones had been thwarted by the home goalie in a one on one.

The pressure told when five minutes later a sloppy back header was seized on by Jones to round the stranded keeper. The next was Glover’s swooping header from Jack Costello’s free-kick, followed at regular intervals by Jones’ second, a Costello cracker from outside the box and five minutes before the break Jones pulling a spot-kick wide after Jordan Mace had been up-ended in the box. The slope added momentum to the hosts’ mini-pusch which lasted a bare ten minutes during which they managed a meagre two half chances before Meads took over again.

On came Ryan Bright, Dave Brennan and ten minutes later Misha Mantel for the visitors to polish off Aloysians with further goals from Peter Eguae, Costello’s second, and two from Bright who now has six from four appearances. Coach Rory Vermeulen, flying solo with Paul Rumley on a scouting trip, stressed that this was a team effort, giving the squad eight out of ten across the board but gave centre-back Lawrie Pointer the MoM award for the latest in a string of superb performances.

Squad: Robinson, Pointer, Chapman, McCombe, Shea, Costello, Mace, Gerrish, Glover, Eguae, C. Jones, Bright, Brennan, Mantel
