Popular greengrocer departs Turnham Green Terrace after nearly 20 years

Chiswick is to lose a familiar face with the announcement that Andreas Georghiou is to leave his fruit and veg shop in Turnham Green Terrace after nineteen years. The shop will remain as a greengrocers under a new proprietor.

Andreas, who has another outlet in Chelsea, will leave the premises for the last time on March 29th. He opened the shop on 18 September 1994, though he started in the trade as a boy in the family food business Adamou & Sons.

He said his departure would mean the end of a 70-year link between the family and Chiswick.

Andreas said he was immensely proud of what he had achieved and the friends he had made during that time and he thanked his 'number two', Darren for all his help over the years.

"However like all great journeys and with a heavy heart, I am sad to announce that our time has come to an end and our shop will shortly close for the last time."

He said there was “no single reason” for the decision and told ChiswickW4.com that one of the positives would be that he could spend more time with his family- he is married with three children.

"There are long hours involved both before the shop opens and after it closes and this is not conducive to family life", he commented.

“I wish to thank everyone who has given their support and friendship over the years", he said, adding he hoped people would visit him in his Chelsea store (4, Cale Street, Chelsea Green) where television chef Nigella Lawson is a customer.

The shop in Chiswick has traded as a fruit and veg supplier for almost 100 years and he said he was pleased to be able to secure its continued legacy as a greengrocer's and urged local people to support the new business.

During his time in Turnham Green Terrace, he became known for his sourcing of unusual produce from overseas for customers, and for his support for the environment. The shop also supplied a number of local restaurants.

Andreas Georghiou has spoken in the past of the difficulties faced by independent traders in Chiswick, confronted with increasing costs for parking permits, refuse collection and council tax. He was particularly critical of parking restrictions for shoppers along Turnham Green Terrace.

"I've had nineteen years in the shop, with highs and lows but I've met many people and made some amazing friends. I will miss Chiswick."
