Sutton Court Road lights to be rephased this weekend

Motorists in Chiswick have been warned to expect traffic disruption from now on until after the Olympics.

Transport for London has announced that the traffic lights at the junction of the A4 and Sutton Court Road will be re-phased on the weekend of July 21/22.

This is part of their overall rephrasing of 1300 sets of traffic lights along the Olympic Route Network, and they have advised the public to try not to drive near Central London from this weekend.

A spokesperson said ‘Games Family’ would start arriving from this weekend and there were delays likely, particularly as the A4 in Chiswick forms part of the arrival route from Heathrow Airport.

Many locals believe that the phasing of the lights at the Sutton Court Road junction with the A4 is incorrect with too little time being given to traffic moving north and south. This has periodically led to jams all the way back up to the Town Hall.

Garrett Emmerson, Chief Operating Officer, Surface Transport TfL, said: “London has begun its transformation into a massive sporting and cultural venue. We’re working hard to support a great Games and keep London moving, but from mid-July London’s roads will become exceptionally busy.

"Our advice to motorists is clear – avoid driving in central London, around the Olympic Route Network (ORN and Games venues from mid-July, but if a journey is absolutely essential be sure to plan ahead and allow extra time.

"Adjustments are being made to 1,300 sets of traffic signals along the ORN to manage the increasing volumes of traffic.  No alterations have yet been made at the junction of Sutton Court Road with the A4, but they are scheduled for the weekend of 21 and 22 July.
