Chiswick Remembers Those Who Died In War

Wreath laying at war memorial and two-minute silence observed

A wreath-laying service was held at Chiswick War Memorial at 10.30am, last Sunday, followed by a Remembrance service at Christ Church, in Turnham Green. Community groups were joined by Scouts, Guides and veterans who laid wreaths at the foot of war memorials in town centres in memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. MP Ruth Cadbury attended as did former MP Mary Macleod.

Many people publicly observed the two minutes silence at 11am today ,which symbolises the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 when the guns fell silent in the battlefields of the First World War. A service was held at the Civic Centre in Lampton Road, Hounslow today at 10.30am, to mark Armistice Day

In this video by chiswickbuzz, local residents recall what it was like for them as children when WW 2 broke out. Another resident talks about his grandfather, who was a Prisoner of War in the notorious Changi Prison. Cllr Paul Lynch, a senior official in the local branch of the British Legion is also interviewed.

Councillor Steve Curran, Leader of Hounslow Council, said: “We have a duty to ensure that the names and memories of those who lost their lives in defence of this country are not forgotten.

“We owe them a debt of gratitude. Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day are occasions for veterans to remember lost friends but it’s a chance for everyone to reflect upon the horrors of war.

“It’s especially important that children are involved in Remembrance services so that generations to come do not forget the impact of war and the bravery of our predecessors.”
