Chiswick Student To Carry Olympic Torch
Reena selected for torch relay because of her youth work
A Chiswick student has been chosen to be one of the torchbearers in the Olympic Torch relay next month for her work inspiring young people.
Reena Silva,(22) a student at the University of West London, has been a youth worker at Cedars Youth Centre for several years. She will be carrying the Olympic Flame on July 23 rd in the Bromley area.
Reena, who was nominated by her boyfriend, said she was very surprised and delighted to be chosen. She has lived in Chiswick with her parents and younger brother all her life and went to Chiswick Community School (now Chiswick school).
She has just completed a BA Digital Media Production course at the University's Ealing School of Art, Design and Media.
Reena was chosen for her “ motivational outlook and for her passion and dedication in working with young people to help them reach their full potential”.
During her time at the University, Reena served as a student ambassador and worked on the Government's Aim Higher scheme as a mentor for young people.
'I feel extremely honoured to have been given the opportunity to carry the torch in the Olympic Torch Relay” said Reena.
It’s a chance to show young people that with hard work and determination you can achieve your goals".
She added that she was a little nervous about running but also excited.
“It will be an amazing experience” .
She had a chance to see the Olympic Park recently when she obtained tickets for some of the test events. She is also going to attend the concert in Hyde Park in late July.
A spokesperson for the University said they were delighted that Reena had been chosen for the torch relay.
