Update On Plans For Power Road Bridge

The TfL works will cost £36 over the next two years

Transport for London (TfL) has given an update to Chiswick councillors on the rebuilding of the Power Road bridge on the A406, North Circular Road.

In a presentation to the Chiswick Area Forum last week, a representative said that the main work to rebuild the bridge would finish in summer 2017. The programme of works is estimated to cost £36 million. The main construction will take place from winter 2015/16 until Autumn 2017. The new bridge is expected to last 120 years.

The original bridge was built in 1922 and carries the A406 North Circular Road (Gunnersbury Avenue) over the railway line. TfL is replacing both the existing road bridge and the pedestrian bridge with a single structure which will have access for cyclists as well as pedestrians. The objective is also to keep four lanes of traffic running throughout.

During the works, temporary footways are in place for local people. Works hours are from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

The chair of the West Chiswick and Gunnersbury Society, Marie Rabouhans asked what was being done about trees. The Manor Gardens area had been denuded of trees and apart from the visual aspect, there was a need for trees to give protection to residents from noise. The area was one of the most highly polluted parts of the borough. She queried why a mature tree near Chiswick roundabout had been felled.

TfL said that there would be a replanting scheme on the site opposite Manor Gardens and elsewhere. The tree which had been felled had a fungal disease.

Local people had previously also complained about the loss of use of the footway and cycleway on the north side of the A406 and about the quality of the temporary cycleway.

TfL promised to get in touch with stakeholders and keep them up to date with the plans. The TfL spokesperson said that they would soon be holding communications events for local residents.
