Main Chiswick Post Office May Be Set To Close Next Year
Counter service could go along with sorting and parcel office
There are fears that the Chiswick Post Office counter may move location next year.
Sources have told Chiswickw4.com that the lease on the main post office at Heathfield Terrace, which is privately owned, is coming to an end next year. With no guarantee it will be renewed, it is considered a strong possibility the Post Office may have to find a new venue for its counter service.
In some areas WH Smith has taken on Post Office counter services but it is thought the Chiswick branch of Smiths would not have enough space.
The move could coincide with the relocating of the Sorting and Parcel office to Bollo Lane - an area now without a bus service since Transport for London (TfL) rerouted the 440 bus service away .This will make it very difficult for the elderly, disabled, and those without a car, to collect their parcels in Bollo Lane.
The Royal Mail told Chiswickw4.com recently that the Sorting Office, which was scheduled to close in Chiswick last May, in preparation for its relocation, had been granted extra time in Chiswick.
A spokesperson said that no decision had been made on a date for its closure in Chiswick.
We have asked Royal Mail about reports that the Chiswick Post Office counter might close next year and will report back.
Ruth Cadbury MP, with members of Chiswick Labour Party, had handed in a petition of over 400 signatures to Royal Mail's Blackfriars HQ last year, and had organised a local letter writing campaign, to try to prevent the office being moved. The Communication Workers' Union which represents staff, was also opposed to the move.
Local activists say they are concerned that the nearby Post Office may be next to be targeted.
"Chiswick Labour Party will continue to campaign to protect all our local services and will be keeping a close eye on the Post Office itself, to make sure it too does not become the victim of further efficiencies,"
