New Youth Club Formed In Chiswick

Vicar starts initiative for youth activities in Grove Park

A new weekly Youth Club for 11-16 year olds is being launched by St Michael’s Church, Elmwood Road, as part of a drive to bring young people together with enjoyable activities.

The club, which will launch on Monday, October 1st, is part of an initiative by dynamic new Vicar Martine Oborne, (on right) wife of Daily Telegraph political columnist and documentary maker Peter Oborne, to develop activities for children and young people in Chiswick.

“The aim of the Youth Club,” she tells W4.com “is to provide a space and time each week where young people can get together, have some fun and start to think about the way to get the best out of life in the future. For us as Christians, this means thinking as much about other people as we do about ourselves.'

St Michael’s has recently welcomed Ministry Assistant and youth worker American Daniel Walther, 21 years old and from Virginia. Daniel will be developing initiatives for young people. A keen saxophonist he hopes to form a jazz band to play in local social venues.

Facilities for young people at Sunday morning services have also increased. “We are increasing our focus on children and young people and St Michael's now has three Sunday groups at Sunday morning service (10am-11.15am),” says Reverend Oborne. “Sunday School for under 7 year olds; Vestry Group for 7-11 year olds (School Years 3-6); and Vestry Plus for young people aged 11 years and older (School Year 7 and up).

An industrious Children’s Council already operates at the church, responsible for organizing local discos and Grove Park’s annual free Shrove Tuesday Pancake Party.

This is in addition to the long standing, 30-strong robed St Michael’s Choir which is free to join and provides training for children aged 7 and above. It is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music, and enjoys an excellent reputation.

The launch of St Michael’s Youth Club promises to be a lively event – with Jacob & Goliath delivering a characteristically bewitching performance. “Like James’s Tim Booth, Jacob Simpson (lead singer of J&G) possesses a rare and subtle ability to mine deep soulfulness from rough scraps of emotion,’ writes music critic Jon Wilde. “The yearning quality in his voice is both bold clarion call and whispered confession. Jacob & Goliath inhabit a sonic landscape that is equal parts earthy folkiness and propulsive pop.”

Entry is free and there will be food and drink as well as music.
