Conservatives Kick Off Bid To Win London Mayoral Election


Chiswick hustings held as party begins a two year battle to oust Sadiq Khan

The Conservative Party's attempt to oust Sadiq Khan as Mayor of London has started locally with a political hustings where local voters got the chance to quiz the three short-listed party candidates.

Shaun Bailey, Andrew Boff and Joy Morrissey canvassed over 100 local voters at St Paul’s Church, Grove Park at a debate chaired by Jeremy Day, Chair of Riverside Ward in Grove Park. Although the next Mayoral election is not due until 2020, the party has a two-year lead in to start the race and is determined to win back the seat taken by Labour in the 2016 Mayoral election.

Local concerns raised at the hustings included Heathrow’s third runway, Housing, Transport, and the prospects for post Brexit London under a Conservative Mayor. Chair Jeremy Day said he was pleased with the attendance and felt that the meeting had put the candidates under pressure to justify their selection.

Members of the party in London will have 9 days from 17 September to cast their votes for the next Conservative Mayoral candidate.


Andrew Boff

In the 2016 Mayoral Election, Labour's Sadiq Khan ousted Boris Johnson, who had served two terms, gaining 56.8%, or over 1.3 million votes. The then Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith came in second place with 43%, followed by the Green Party, Liberal democrats , UKIP and others.

Shaun Bailey, has been a member of the London Assembly since 2016, while Andrew Boff has been an LA member since 2008. Joy Morrissey is an Ealing councillor since 2014.
