They say Thames Tunnel would improve water quality of the Thames

The Chiswick Pier Trust has added its support to campaigners for the proposed 'Super Sewer' project.

Wayne Bellamy, Trustee of the Chiswick Pier Trust said that the Trust was a member of Thames Tunnel Now (TTN) and supported its long term objectives of improving the water quality of the river thames.

"Over the years we have facilitated opportunities for community engagement with the "Super Sewer" project and held meetings and exhibitions for the exchange of information and ideas for these objectives to be realised.

The Chiswick Pier Trust exists to put people in touch with the river, so, naturally, we support the idea of keeping the river clean and safe for all users," he said.

Project managers for the 'Super Sewer' are preparing to submit their plans to the Planning Inspectorate next week and some campaign groups want the Mayor of London to give it his backing.

Residents along Strand on the Green recently called for action to improve water quality, saying it is particularly bad after rain, and claiming that houseboats further along the river were responsible for some of the sewage problems.

At present campaign groups say the water contains harmful bacteria such as E coli, hepatitis and streptococci.

The 25km super sewer would run under the Thames starting at Acton and running through Central to East London at a cost of £4.1 billion. Thames Water is set to pay the majority of the cost and work would take an estimated three years.

The project has been the subject of some controversy and a public consultation has already been held. The plans are to be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate next Thursday ( Feb 26). If approved work could start in the next two years.
