The Three Great Manor Houses Of Chiswick

James Wisdom and Val Bott talk on how these buildings influenced local life

The free talk on The Manor Houses of Grove Park was such a success last October that the The Grove Park Group (GPG) are presenting another, expanded version on Tuesday 9 April.

James Wisdom’s talk on the histories of Sutton Court, Grove House and Chiswick House filled the Catholic Centre, with many turned away, so a new presentation will now take place at the larger St. Michael’s Centre in Elmwood Road.

James, Chair of the Brentford & Chiswick Local History Society, will be joined by fellow local historian Val Bott to give an expanded version of the previous talk, which was a fascinating examination of the development of a unique stretch of land beside the river Thames, accompanied by many illustrations.

James and Val say, "Find out how Grove House, Chiswick House and the Sutton Court Manor House dominated the lives and the landscape of this area from the earliest times to the 20th century”.

Of the three great houses that shaped the Grove Park area (Chiswick House, Grove House and the Sutton Court Manor House), sadly only Chiswick House remains, but the old lanes, field boundaries and estate walls can still be found.

Tickets for the free talk are available only via Eventbrite, in order for the Grove Park Group to assess and control numbers, in the light of the previous event’s popularity. The event is at 7:30pm, at the St. Michael’s Centre, Elmwood Road, W4 3DY.

GPG chair Jonathan Knight said: “We have been trying to maintain a tradition of free talks on local topics of interest, and it was very gratifying to see so many people attend James’ first lecture, which was fascinating. With this expanded version, we hope it will appeal to those who attended in October, but also give a chance for it to be enjoyed by those who sadly weren’t able to get in at that time.”
