Park announce that work has been completed
Chiswick House and Gardens is open as usual to the public and the tree which had split in two and fallen onto a wall has now been dealt with.
A spokesperson for the Chiswick House and Gardens said that the Horse Chestnut tree had been been safely felled at the point where the split occurred. The trunk has been allowed to remain standing as a source of valuable habitat. Normal park operating hours will now resume.
Earlier in the week there was a large cordoned off area in the ‘Northern Wilderness’ area near the Will To Win tennis club and car-park as tree surgeons worked on making the area safe following the dramatic splitting of the tree during a rainy and windy period last Sunday evening.
Head Gardener, Fiona Crumley, had reported that ‘the tree had appeared to be in good health but had split in two about thirty feet off the ground’. Nobody was injured.
"Due to the condition and height of the tree, it will need to be removed with the help of specialist platform machinery. Once the tree has been felled and safely removed, the section of the collapsed wall between Chiswick House Gardens and the Will to Win Tennis Court will then be repaired. The age of the wall means that historic conservation guidelines will be followed for the rebuilding." said a statement earlier this week,.
The public had been urged to avoid all cordoned off and ' no entry' areas while work continued in the area where the tree fell during the windy weather.
