The Tabard Theatre in Chiswick will stage Freud’s Last Session, presenting Mark St. Germain’s acclaimed drama that imagines an extraordinary meeting between Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis on the eve of the Second World War.

Set on 3 September 1939, the day Britain declared war on Germany, the play places the legendary psychoanalyst and the celebrated Christian writer in Freud’s London home for a fierce and funny debate on God, love, suffering and the meaning of life. Beneath the intellectual sparring lies a portrait of two men confronting their own mortality, past traumas and the approaching horrors of war.

The production stars Finlay McLean (Still Game, Waterloo Road, The Bombing of Pan Am 103) as Freud, with John Kay Steel (The Red Barn, National Theatre; Casualty, The Bombing of Pan Am 103) as Lewis. It is directed by award-winning director David Ian Neville, whose previous work includes the Fringe First Award-winning Exile at the Bush Theatre.

Neville says the play’s emotional depth is central to its power: “If you were to take away the famous names, at root we have two vulnerable men who have lived through trauma and see the horrors of war once more approaching.”

Inspired by Dr Armand M. Nicholi Jr.’s book The Question of God, Freud’s Last Session enjoyed a celebrated Off-Broadway run and was later adapted for the screen.

Freud’s Last Session runs from 11–28 November with performances form Wednesday–Friday at 7.30pm, Saturdays at 6pm. Running time is around 80 minutes with no interval.

Tickets from £20.

Tabard Theatre is at 2 Bath Road, W4 1LW just next to Turnham Green tube station.
