A new staging of RC Sherriff’s psychological mystery Home at Seven will run at the Tabard Theatre in Chiswick from 2–20 September, before touring other venues in the playwright’s home town later in the month. The revival marks the 50th anniversary of Sherriff’s death and is the play’s first London outing since its West End premiere in 1950 which starred Ralph Richardson..

Written in the aftermath of the Second World War, Home at Seven follows an ordinary man who returns home to discover he’s been inexplicably absent for 24 hours. As he tries to reconstruct the missing day, questions arise around his possible involvement in a theft and murder. Directed by Claire Evans, the production explores post-war disorientation, the mechanics of memory, and social respectability.

“Sherriff examines the little lies we tell ourselves and each other to maintain the fragile veneer of civilised life,” said the director, who also serves as producer. She describes the play as a reflection of national recovery, with resonances for audiences today.

RC Sherriff, best known for his World War I drama Journey’s End, lived in Elmbridge and left his home to the borough council with the intention it be used to promote arts and culture. The upcoming Elmbridge tour is supported by the RC Sherriff Trust, which continues that mission through grants and cultural programming.

Performances at the Tabard Theatre are scheduled Tuesday to Friday at 7:30pm, with a 6:00pm Saturday showing. The cast includes Maddie Crofts, Sam Ellis, Greg Fitch, Bridget Lambert, Karl Moffatt, Jeremy Todd, and Andrew Williams. Tickets range from £19.50 to £23.50 and are available at tabard.org.uk or by calling 020 8995 6035.

Tickets can be booked online and cost £24.50 or £21.50 for concessions.
