George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion to Be Staged at the Tabard

Theatre's relaunch continues with a three-week run of the play

Francesca Ottley plays Eliza Doolittle

The first extended production at the relaunched Tabard Theatre is to be an adaptation of Pygmalion, the play by George Bernard Shaw.

Perhaps more widely known for providing the original story for the musical ‘My Fair Lady’, it is being staged as part of DOT Productions’ annual tour.

The Essex-based touring theatre company travels the country staging bespoke productions and this version of Pygmalion has been performed at indoor and outdoor venues across the country including George Bernard Shaw’s garden.

The play tells the story of the struggles of a professor of phonetics, Henry Higgins, to transform Eliza Doolittle enough to convince upper-class society that she is one of them.

Pygmalion explores the English class system and aims to expose the hollowness at the heart of that society.

There are five actors in the cast with Francesca Ottley appearing as Eliza Doolittle and Christopher Walthorne as Henry Higgins with Andrew Lindfield as Colonel Pickering. Jack Mathews and Cassandra Hodges fill the other roles.

Pygmalion runs from Tuesday 13 September to Saturday 1 October and will be performed every Tuesday to Saturday at 7.30pm. It runs for around two hours including an interval.

Eliza is introduced to high society

Tickets cost £23.50 (£19.50 for concessions) other than for the first two performances which are priced at £18 (£15 for concessions).
