Local Artist Sumi Sastri Presents Places Near and Far
Her debut solo exhibition is being held at the Clayton Hotel

This summer, Chiswick audiences will have the chance to step into a world of colour, memory and movement as local artist Sumi Sastri presents her debut solo exhibition, Places Near and Far, at The Atrium, Clayton Hotel, from 14 June to 31 July .
The exhibition brings together more than thirty abstract works inspired by Sumi ’s travels through some of the world’s most striking landscapes — from the vast stillness of the Namib Desert to the dense greens of the Amazon, the warm tones of the Iberian Peninsula and the rugged edges of Cornwall. Rather than depicting these places literally, she uses them as starting points for exploring how different environments shape the way we see, feel and remember.
Working with a deliberately limited palette of red, yellow, blue and white, Sumi builds her compositions through repeated marks and layered colour. The result is a series of paintings that feel rhythmic and atmospheric, inviting viewers to slow down and spend time with them. Her approach treats colour as a kind of shared language — something that can carry emotion and meaning across cultures and continents.
Although the works draw on far-flung locations, the exhibition itself is rooted firmly in the local. The Atrium’s light-filled space becomes a calm, reflective setting where visitors can wander, pause and make their own connections between the pieces. The show is designed to be welcoming and accessible, whether you’re a regular gallery-goer or simply curious about contemporary art.
Sumi’s interests range widely — from social history and geography to philosophy, mathematics and the natural world — and these threads run quietly through the exhibition. Her influences include artists such as Mark Rothko, Hilma af Klint and Yayoi Kusama, as well as traditions from Indian sacred geometry to Japanese minimalism. But the work remains distinctly her own: thoughtful, open-ended and rooted in a sense of wonder about how the world fits together.
