Members of the Barnes Big Band
April 23, 2025
The Barnes Big Band is set for a return to St Nicholas Chiswick to perform a repertoire of lively and accessible jazz.
The fundraising event, organised by The Friends of St. Nicholas Church, takes place on Friday 2 May at 7:30pm.
The Barnes Big Band is a long established 16-piece jazz band made up of professional and semi-professional musicians. It plays a wide-ranging set list from the music of the Count Basie Orchestra right through to more modern compositions, many of which have been written specifically for The Barnes Band by musicians associated with the band over the years.
This year’s programme will include music from top big band arrangers Thad Jones, Sammy Nestico, Quincy Jones, Gordon Goodwin, Tom Kubis, Dave Barduhn and Francy Boland plus original music composed by current lead alto saxophone, Steve Darlington.
The band is led by trombonist Andrew Butcher who has played with the band for 17 years but took over from Stan Reynolds in 2018, a trumpet player with the legendary Ted Heath Orchestra.
The band for the St Nicholas concert is as follows:
Saxophones: Steve Darlington, Bill Biddell, David Mitchell, Jane Darlington, Mark Aston
Trumpets: Tony Lee, Rob Cossins, Vito La Sala, Fergus Pateman
Trombones: Andrew Butcher, Jonny Parker, Amanda Rowlatt, Bill Symington
Rhythm section: Caroline Cooper - piano, Tim Pharoah - bass, Denis Smith - drums
Tickets cost £12 on the door or £6 for under 25s with no charge for the Friends of St. Nicholas Church.
Refreshments will be served including a pay bar from the opening of the doors at 7pm.
All the money raised will go towards the renovation of the stone work on the church.
St Nicholas Church is at Church Street, Chiswick, W4 2PJ.
