The Friends of St Nicholas Church is hosting a talk by local urban historian Dr Tracey Logan.
Titled ‘Chiswick in the 20th Century: visions of the future, 1894-1924’ the lecture will look out how people at the turn of the 20th century wanted the area to develop.
Residents, including the Vicar of Chiswick at St. Nicolas, were anxious not just to become a part of west London sprawl. They considered whether the area should turn itself into a resort like Richmond or style itself as a Royal Suburb.
The talk is based on discoveries made by Dr Logan in her PhD research which revealed that Chiswick's turn-of-the-century 20th century quest for an independent future led ultimately to its sudden 1900 marriage of convenience with neighbouring Brentford.
After a 20-year BBC career as an award-winning radio science reporter, producer & presenter, Dr Logan switched her academic focus to the growth of Greater London in the late-19th / early-20th century, including the impact of electricity, powered flight and the motor car on ancient villages just outside London.
It is taking place at 7pm on Wednesday 13 November at St Nicholas Church, Church Street, W4 2PH.
Entrance is £12 or £5 for concessions with Friends of St Nicholas Church going for free. Refreshments will be available.
St Nicholas Church is at Church Street (W4 2PJ).
It is the earliest of the parish churches of Chiswick. Founded some 1,300 years ago, it was rebuilt in the 1880s, but the tower dates from 1425.
The purpose of the Friends of St Nicholas Church is the repair and maintenance of the building and churchyard, and its fixtures, fittings, and contents.
The group raises funds from Friends’ subscriptions, and from events in the church and elsewhere. New members are always welcome.
