LOCAL SCOUT GROUP OUT TO RAISE £65,000

3rd Chiswick Scout Group 2002 Development Appeal

An important development appeal has been launched by the 3rd Chiswick Scout Group to upgrade their Scout Centre facilities located in Wilson Walk next to Stamford Brook tube station.

The existing Scout Centre was built largely by volunteers when the former hut was destroyed by fire in 1978. At that time only external toilet facilities were provided, with the exception of a single, small toilet incorporated into the main building.

The arrangements have proved wholly inadequate for the current, very busy needs of the Scout Centre, which is host to a growing number of over 70 children of all ages, the Tara House School, Residents Associations and Amenity Groups meetings, and widespread local community use at other times.

As Peter Wolton, Appeal Co-ordinator, says: "The Scout Group, which was founded in 1909, needs now to prepare for the next 100 years of Scouting, and it is important that the Scout Centre has the up to date and necessary facilities to achieve this."

Development plans include modern toilet and shower facilities inside the Scout Centre with access for the disabled, central heating and hot water, a large lobby area and improved entry to handle the recent increases in traffic. Planning permission has been granted.

The Appeal Target is £65,000 of which £7,600 has been raised in only a few weeks. Sources of funding include events, charitable foundations, local government grants, local businesses and donations, and the Scout Group hopes to have the money collected in time for the Scouts Summer Fayre in July this summer, with building to start shortly afterwards.

Mr Wolton continues, "people have been amazingly generous so far, and we have a busy programme of fund-raising events planned up until the end of the Summer. If anyone can help in any way we would like to know."

The 3rd Chiswick Scout Group is the oldest and largest in the area and has three weekly meetings; Beaver Scouts (ages 6-8), which meets on Monday nights, Cub Scouts (ages 8-10) which meets on Wednesday nights and Scouts (ages 10-15) which meets on Thursday nights. The Group is hoping to expand its membership once the development is complete, and with its core values of inclusion, understanding and respect, hopes to carry on connecting the communities of Chiswick, Acton and neighbouring boroughs for another 100 years.
