The Phil Brown Swingtet returns to The Duck and Ball, Riverside Drive, on Thursday 18 June for another lively evening of jazz — and will continue their monthly residency on the third Thursday of each month throughout 2026.
Led by veteran trombonist Phil Brown, this six-piece ensemble covers every corner of the jazz spectrum, from Armstrong’s traditional swing to Basie’s big-band classics.
The line-up features Phil’s son Lester Brown (trumpet and flugelhorn), Mark Aston (clarinet and saxes), Mike Bennett (double bass), Andrew Clancy (piano and keyboard) and David Clancy (drums). Regular guest performers include vocalists Diane Slater, Teresa Jennings, Isabel Saunders and Stephan O’Goodson, alongside trumpeters Chris Hodgkins and Anthony Cox and members of the extended Clancy family.
Their May session featured a sparkling mix of classics — from Fletcher Henderson’s Oh Baby and WC Handy’s Ole Miss to Ellington’s Don’t Get Around Much Anymore and Sonny Rollins’ St Thomas — with guest appearances from Anthony Cox and Eric Gilchrist and the elegant Lindy Circle Dancers bringing swing to the floor.
Entry is free, and parking is available. Music runs 8 – 10.30 pm, with nearby buses E3, 190 and 533 serving Riverside Drive. The Duck and Ball (12 Riverside Drive, Chiswick W4 2SP) offers excellent food and a relaxed bar atmosphere in the pavilion of Chiswick Cricket Club.
Several band members, including Phil Brown and guests, will also join the 12-piece Covent Garden Jazz Marching Band for the annual Covent Garden Rent Ceremony in the Piazza on Thursday 2 July — founding members Eric Gilchrist, Chris Hodgkins and Tim Wacher among them. All are very welcome.
