The band performing last month
January 30, 2026
Chiswick’s jazz lovers are in for another lively evening as The Phil Brown Swingtet returns to The Duck and Ball, Riverside Drive, on Thursday 19 February, with performances continuing on the third Thursday of every month throughout the year.
Entry is free, and everyone is warmly invited.
This much-loved six-piece band covers an impressive sweep of jazz history — from Louis Armstrong’s early swing to the smooth drive of Count Basie — making each session a welcoming mix for seasoned fans and newcomers alike. Led by the hugely experienced Phil Brown on trombone, the line-up features:
The group is known for its relaxed, good-humoured atmosphere and its ability to shift effortlessly between traditional, mainstream and modern jazz styles. Regular guest musicians and vocalists add to the spontaneity, with recent appearances from Diane Slater, Isabel Saunders, Teresa Jennings, Stephan O’Goodson, Chris Hodgkins, Anthony Cox and members of the extended Clancy family.
Their January session set the tone for the year: a spirited opener with Earl Hines’ Rosetta, a swinging Centre Piece, and a high-energy That’s A Plenty showcasing Dave Clancy’s drumming. The second set brought guest features, call-and-response moments and even a “stereophonic” finale of The Saints, played from opposite ends of the room. The evening was made even more memorable by the elegant Lindy Circle dancers, who are always welcome guests.
With free entry, on-site parking, and excellent food and drink available, The Duck and Ball offers one of the friendliest jazz nights in west London. Sessions run from 8pm to 10.30pm, and the venue is easily reached by bus.
The Duck and Ball is located at 12 Riverside Drive, Chiswick W4 2SP, opposite Dukes Meadows, in the pavilion of Chiswick Cricket Club.
