Successful Start to The Phil Brown Swingtet Monthly Residency

The Phil Brown Swingtet has played the first gig in what is to become a monthly residence at a venue near the river in Chiswick.

The six piece jazz band performed to an appreciative audience on 16 January at The Duck and Ball on Riverside Drive (W4 2SP). The Duck and Ball is the venue inside Chiswick Cricket Club.

Phil has been leading bands for more than half a century and his band had been resident at the Brewery Tap in Brentford for 37 years, when local development made it impossible to continue, hence the move to Chiswick.

The band plays virtually every style of jazz, traditional, mainstream and modern - from Beiderbecke to Basie.

Apart from the hugely experienced Phil on trombone, his son Lester plays trumpet and flugelhorn, Mark Aston is on clarinet, alto, tenor and baritone saxes, Mike Bennett is on double bass and brothers Andrew and David Clancy are on piano / keyboard and drums respectively: it’s probably the only band playing in the UK with a father and son and two brothers.

Regular guests include vocalist Diane Slater, trumpeters Chris Hodgkins and Anthony Cox, Pete Clancy (Andrew and David’s dad) on trombone and many others.

The residency is for the third Thursday of each month which means the next chance to see them will be on 20 February.

Entry is free and parking is available. Sessions will be from 8 -10.30pm
