There is a chance to learn about the art of comedy with Charlie Barker next Sunday.

Charlie Baker, the founder and artistic director of Chiswick-based Persever Productions, will be holding a masterclass titled ‘Finding the Funny’ and you can come along to observe.

Charlie was an actor for over 25 years before becoming a teacher and director. She has worked at many vocational drama schools including Mountview, Central, Oxford School of Drama, ArtsEd ALRA, DSL & currently Italia Conti.

She has lectured in comedy at degree level and run comedy workshops at The Actors Centre and with the Actors Richmond Club.

In this masterclass Charlie will examine some of the literary devices used by the great comedy writers. This masterclass concentrates on text-based comedy, as an actor’s tool-kit (rather than looking at stand-up which is basically a writer’s tool).

With the help of two young actors from Persever’s company Charlie will take the audience through the initial stages of analysing text in order to ‘find the funny’.

After the 70 minutes masterclass there will be a Q & A for anyone interested in knowing a little bit more.

The event takes place at the Catholic Centre on Dukes Avenue (W4 2AE) on Sunday 7 April at 7.30pm and tickets cost £8.

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.

We’ve always done that and won’t be changing, in fact we’d like to do more.

However, the readership that these stories generates is often below that needed to cover the cost of producing them. Our financial resources are limited and the local media environment is intensely competitive so there is a constraint on what we can do.
