A watercolour by Julia Cassels
January 6, 2026
Chiswick Pier is starting the new year with a trio of events celebrating creativity, wellbeing and the river that shapes local life. From hands-on art to poetry inspired by the Thames, and a gentle yoga session designed for all abilities, there’s something for everyone on the riverside this January and February.
Watercolour Painting Day with Julia Cassels
Thursday 15 January, 9.30am–3.30pm
Chiswick Pier Trust welcomes back acclaimed watercolour artist Julia Cassels for another of her popular full-day workshops. This year’s theme is robins, giving participants the chance to explore colour, texture and character in one of Britain’s most beloved birds.
Cassels’ workshops have built a loyal following over the years, attracting both complete beginners and experienced painters looking to refine their technique. The day costs £65, and with limited spaces available early booking is strongly advised. Participants should bring their own materials, a packed lunch and drinks.
To book, call 020 8742 2713.
Poetry Readings and Tales of River Adventures with Ed Hall
Tuesday 20 January, 7–8pm (doors 6.30pm)
The Pier House, W4 2UG
RNLI lifeboatman Ed Hall, a familiar face at Chiswick Lifeboat Station, will share poems and stories drawn from his years on the Thames. He will be reading from his new book Tamesis, an illustrated collection capturing the drama, beauty and quiet moments of life on the river. The book features artwork by Gary Partridge, a former Coldstream Guards soldier turned artist, and includes a foreword by Sir Ian McKellen.
McKellen praises the collection for its blend of “high drama” and “wistful reverie,” all rooted in Hall’s deep, unsentimental affection for the Thames.
Tickets are £5, or free for Chiswick Pier members, and can be booked via TicketTailor. Refreshments will be available from 6.30pm.
Chair Yoga at the Pier
Monday 9 February, 2.15–3pm
For those looking to unwind, stretch or simply try something new, Chiswick Pier is hosting a gentle chair yoga session suitable for all ages and abilities. Chair-based practice offers many of the benefits of traditional yoga — from reduced stress and improved flexibility to better sleep and eased joint pain — without the need to get down on the floor.
The 45-minute session costs £15. To book, call 020 8742 2713.
Events like this are organised by the Chiswick Pier Trust which works to engage people with the River Thames. It provides access to the Thames and supports major river events, as well as organising events of its own.
