Left: The Medway. Right: Adam Taylor
September 13, 2025
An illustrated talk at Chiswick Pier House later this month will delve into the lesser-known history and ecology of the River Medway’s islands, tracing their role in military defence, maritime life, and natural heritage.
Presented by canoeist and researcher Adam Taylor, the event will take place at 7pm on Tuesday, 30 September at The Pier House, Corney Reach Way, W4 2UG.
Drawing on archival material, technical plans, census records, and personal exploration, Adam’s presentation aims to reconstruct the lives of those who inhabited the Medway’s islands and the shifting landscape they occupied.
Among the subjects covered are the construction of the twin forts of Hoo and Darnet, the story of a pub once located mid-estuary, and the fate of a World War I German submarine.
The talk also includes a close-up look at the flora and fauna of the Medway estuary—an area described by Taylor as a vast and beautiful wilderness.
Doors open at 6.30pm, with refreshments available. Tickets are priced at £5, with free entry for members of the Chiswick Pier Trust. Non-members are welcome.
Booking is available via this link.
