Chiswick Pier will once again serve as a prime viewing spot for the Great River Race on Saturday 20 September. More than 330 crews from across the globe take to the Thames in a 21-mile challenge from London Docklands to Ham.
Part of the Totally Thames Festival, the race features traditional-style boats—each with at least four oars or paddles, a cox, and a passenger—and attracts a wide range of participants, from elite athletes to teams in fancy dress raising money for charity. Crews represent rowing clubs, schools, livery companies, emergency services, and community groups.
The race begins at approximately 10:15am on a “slowest first, fastest last” handicap basis. The first boats are expected to pass Chiswick Pier around 12:30pm, with the spectacle continuing for at least an hour.
Spectators can enjoy refreshments throughout the day. Coffee Bike will be serving hot drinks from 8am, while Chiswick Pier Trust will offer cakes, cold drinks, wine and beer from 2pm. Eat Greek will be preparing fresh wraps, and ice creams will also be available.
With its long river views and festive atmosphere, Chiswick Pier remains one of the best vantage points to enjoy this unique celebration of rowing and community spirit.
These events are organised by the Chiswick Pier Trust which works to engage people with the River Thames. It provides access to the Thames and supports major river events, as well as organising events of its own.
