Pier to host celebrations as torch completes its final leg along the Thames

The Olympic torch is travelling down the Thames on the final lap of its journey on July 27th, passing Chiswick at around 10.15am.

It is reported that the torch will be carried along the River Thames on the £1 million barge built for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant. The Gloriana was the star attraction then, and more recently at Henley Royal Regatta where it was rowed by a crew of British Olympic oarsmen and women who competed from 1948 to 2008.

On the opening day of the Olympics, the gilded barge will leave Hampton Court Palace and sail down the Thames to the Tower of London before being taken to the Olympic Park for the opening ceremony.

The Chiswick Pier Trust invite you to come and have the best view of the torch, the beautiful barge Gloriana and accompanying flotilla from the Pier at Corney Reach and are also laying on refreshments and activities to keep families amused from 9.30am -11.30am.

Setting off in the early morning it should reach Chiswick Pier at the more civilised holiday time of around 10.15am. The Chiswick Pier Trust have arranged that you can grab breakfast and watch your children join in some mini Olympic games and activities while you wait for the flotilla from 9.30am.

The torch will sail downstream past the Houses of Parliament before ending its voyage near Tower Bridge. The final lap will be the end of an 8,000 mile journey featuring 8,000 runners over 70 days.
