Olympic Gold Medallist talks to Chiswick Pier Trust

An Olympic Gold medallist, who rowed twice a day past Chiswick Pier while in training, will revisit W4 to give a talk about his experience.

Rowley Douglas MBE, a Gold Medallist from the Sydney 2000 Games kicks off the Chiswick Pier Trust series of talks on Tuesday, January 24th, at 7.30pm at Chiswick Pier House, Edensor Road.

Rowley, who is in training for this year's Olympics, was the coxswain of the victorious British Men’s Rowing Eight in Sydney, playing a key role in bringing the crew together during training and racing.

The Cox has to work between coach and crew to achieve training goals, execute race strategy and motivate the athletes to push to their limits.

Rowley trained at Hammersmith, passing Chiswick Pier twice a day, every day in the lead up to his victory.

In July 2010 Rowley asked to trial for the coxing position in the British Rowing Team. His goal is to gain selection in the British Men’s Rowing Eight and start the road towards the London Olympics, where he is aiming to take the top prize of an Olympic Gold Medal once more.

The path to Gold will be somewhat different this time as Rowley is now
34 years old, married, and has two boys, Max (4) and Marlow (18 months). Competition will be fierce just to attain the seat in the crew, as Rowley will have to prove himself over three other skilled and successful coxes.

And as if Rowley did not have enough challenges in his life, he is also taking part in the Gold Challenge a unique new charity challenge with the simple goal: to complete every Olympic sport before the end of 2012.

You can find out more about this epic endeavour on Rowley’s fundraising page

Doors open at 7pm and the event will start at 7.30pm. Free to Chiswick Pier Trust Members, £3 to non-members. Chiswick Pier and Chiswick Pier House are at the end of Corney Road and Edensor Road, Chiswick, W4 2UG. Refreshments will be available. The talk is part of a series organised by the Chiswick Pier Trust, a charity that puts people in touch with the River Thames.
