A New Chapter in Celebrating Chiswick's Artists
Project to list those who have worked locally inspired by writer's timeline

Chiswick’s artistic heritage will take centre stage on Chiswick Artists Night, when the community gathers at the historic Tabard pub for the launch of the new Timeline of Chiswick Artists & Illustrators. The event begins at 6pm on Saturday 7 March , and everyone is warmly invited to come along, raise a glass, and help celebrate the extraordinary creative legacy of W4.
The new online timeline has been created in partnership with Abundance London as a companion to the Chiswick Timeline of Writers & Books, which now includes around 500 names. That earlier project was itself inspired by Abundance London’s landmark mural, Chiswick Timeline: A History in Art & Maps, unveiled by Sir Peter Blake in January 2018.
This new archive turns the spotlight onto the painters, illustrators, printmakers, sculptors and designers who have lived and worked in Chiswick across the centuries. It aims to record every published or exhibited artist who has lived in W4, from the giants of British art history to the many contemporary creatives who continue to shape the area’s cultural life.
Visitors to the launch will be able to explore a preview of the timeline, which already spans artists from William Hogarth and Johann Zoffany to Camille Pissarro and Sir Peter Blake. It also links to genre-based listings, covering everything from architecture to sculpture.
The launch takes place in the Tabard pub on Bath Road, a Grade II-listed Arts & Crafts landmark designed by Norman Shaw. Its long association with local creativity makes it a fitting home for the evening’s celebrations. Guests are encouraged to “Buy a painter a pint – or a Picpoul!”.
Chiswick has long been a magnet for artists. Hogarth’s House remains a cornerstone of local heritage, while the area has nurtured generations of painters and illustrators. The Artists at Home open-studio weekend, founded by Julian Trevelyan and Mary Fedden, continues to showcase the work of more than 80 local artists each year. The Bedford Park Summer Exhibition and the Arts Society Chiswick’s Outside Art Trail, which highlights 24 public artworks, further demonstrate the depth and diversity of the area’s creative scene.
The new timeline brings these strands together, offering a single, evolving resource that honours both historic figures and today’s working artists.
The organisers are keen to ensure the archive is as complete as possible. Anyone who knows of a published or exhibited artist living in Chiswick W4 is invited to email Jenny de Montfort with their name and date of birth so they can be added to the timeline.
The launch forms part of a wider celebration of the Golden Age of Children’s Books, TV and Theatre, taking place at St Michael & All Angels Church and the Tabard Theatre earlier on the same day. Visitors can explore talks, performances and family events before heading to the Tabard pub for the evening’s festivities.
