A talk by renowned historian Caroline Knight

The Chiswick House lecture series continues on Wednesday, April 18th with a talk by Caroline Knight entitled, ' A History of Burlington House'. The lecture takes place from 7-9pm in the Domed Salon, Chiswick House. Tickets are £20.

Since 1867 Burlington House has been the home of the Royal Academy, although it is one of the few surviving great private houses in central London to survive.

Begun in 1666, it was bought as an unfinished shell by Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Burlington, who also bought Chiswick House a few years later.

His grandson, the 3rd Earl, made considerable alterations to it, and used it in conjunction with Chiswick when he was in London. This lecture will look at the history of the building, its owners and, briefly, its subsequent public use.

Caroline Knight, FSA, is an architectural historian living in West London, She has had a long-standing involvement with Chiswick House, and is currently a member of their Advisory panel. She runs the Victoria & Albert Museum’s High Renaissance-Baroque Year Course, and is a freelance lecturer and author. She is currently writing a history of the Royal Academy’s buildings for a forthcoming book.

This exclusive evening lecture will be hosted in the stunning Domed Saloon at Chiswick House, designed by Lord Burlington in 1728 to house his fine art collection and to entertain friends, family and high society.
