Patronage and Politics Handel and his Italian Rivals

Jane Clark brings Janiculum to Chiswick House once again

Once again Jane Clark is bringing Janiculum to Chiswick House for an evening of wonderful Chamber Music on Thursday 12th May. The concert starts at 7.00pm and has one interval during which drinks will be served.

Patronage and Politics Handel and his Italian Rivals: Janiculum: Marie Vassiliou (soprano) John Trusler (violin) Jane Clark (harpsichord)

The programme follows Lord Burlington’s patronage of musicians and includes music by Handel (who lived for a time at Burlington House), Bononcini (who used it as a poste restante), Castrucci (who ‘lodged at Chiswick’) and Scarlatti (the frontispiece of whose sonatas published in London refers to a ceiling at Chiswick).

To add local interest music by Johann Christian Bach, youngest son of Johann Sebastian who lived in Kew, will be included.

Janiculum was founded by Jane Clark primarily to perform the unpublished music she had found in her research on The Grand Tour. It takes its name from the hill in Rome where so many tourists had their portraits painted. The group specialises in relating programmes to the other arts. It has appeared at the British Museum, the Wallace Collection, the Royal Academy of Arts, the National Gallery, the Finchcocks Festival, the Foundling Museum and many historic houses. Their programmes, which the National Trust called ‘Bringing history alive through music’ are said to be ‘an insight into the music that appealed to contemporary audiences’.

This is always a highly popular event and Chiswick House Friends have been given an exclusive week, from 18th-25th April to buy tickets before they go on public sale.

Tickets, at £20 each plus agents fee, can be obtained directly on-line from Ticketweb, at www.ticketweb.co.uk or by printing out and completing an application form. The form should be mailed with a cheque and SAE to the address given.
