Two of the gardens that will be open to the public
June 20, 2026
One of Chiswick’s most cherished summer traditions returns on Sunday 28 June, when householders across Bedford Park once again open their private gardens to the public. Running from 2pm to 6pm, the Bedford Park Open Gardens afternoon offers a rare chance to explore some of the area’s most beautiful, imaginative and lovingly tended green spaces — all while raising funds for local charities.
The event begins at St Michael & All Angels Parish Hall, where visitors can pick up a map showing which gardens are open, along with the all-important sticker confirming their ticket purchase. Entry costs £10, with children admitted free, making it a relaxed and family-friendly way to spend a summer afternoon.
From cottage-style planting to contemporary landscaping, wildlife havens to meticulously designed borders, the dozen or so participating gardens reflect the creativity and character of Bedford Park’s residents. Many are hidden behind hedges and walls, normally glimpsed only in passing — and it is this sense of discovery that has made the event a highlight of the local calendar for more than four decades.
The tradition dates back to 1983, when the first Open Gardens afternoon was held and later inspired Fenja Anderson’s book Gardening in Bedford Park. Today, the event continues to support a group of local charities: St Michael’s, The Upper Room, The McCabe Educational Trust, and The Mulberry Centre.
From 3pm, visitors can return to the Parish Hall for cream teas, adding a classic touch to the day. Tickets can be booked in advance or purchased at the door. The event is supported by Ruth Willmott Associates, UK Sotheby’s International Realty, and Wheelers of Chiswick.
