The Bedford Park Society is holding its autumn lecture on Thursday 12 October.
Art historian, curator and author Dr Suzanne Fagence Cooper will reveal the creativity and radicalism of women involved in the Aestheticism and the Arts and Crafts Movement.
Her subject matter links to Bedford Park's own history as an artistic community with its many significant female protagonists.
She will look at the work of women as designers, makers and leaders of taste — including Jane Morris. She and her husband William Morris moved to Turnham Green in 1872, a few minutes’ walk from Jonathan Carr's proposed garden suburb of Bedford Park.
The lecture will explore the ideas of femininity and women's work in creating the "Ideal Home" in late 19th century London.
Dr Suzanne Fagence Cooper is an art historian working on 19th and 20th century British culture. She was a curator and Research Fellow at the V&A Museum, and recently curated a major exhibition on John Ruskin and J M W Turner for York Art Gallery. She is the author of To See Clearly: Why Ruskin Matters, Effie Gray and Pre-Raphaelite Art in the V&A Museum.
Suzanne is a consultant for TV, film and radio, and an invited lecturer for the Arts Society and Cunard. Her latest book: How we might live: At Home with Jane and William Morris was published in paperback in June 2023.
The lecture is being held at The Atrium in the Arts Educational Schools at 14 Bath Road, Chiswick (W4 1LY). It begins at 8pm with the bar open at 7pm.
Tickets cost £10 plus a 70p booking fee and can be purchased online or picked up from Postmark on Turnham Green Terrace.
The lecture is an open event, and all are welcome.
